Waterloo Village

Waterloo Village is a partially restored Canal Town in Sussex County. It is in the process of being restored but due to monetary shortages, repair is slow and its only open on a limited basis, mostly for school tours. However it is open for people to walk around and explore. There is also a functioning church with active parish still there, so Sunday mornings you may have other visitors. Its also a part of the Morris Canal, there’s a restored mill, a Smith’s store and many other goodies, including the Rutan Cabin Farmsite. There’s many Victorian houses, in varying states of disrepair, and an Lenape Indian village which is becomes popular with the fourth graders of New Jersey. On our trip we did not visit the Indian village. The Indian Village tours are found at Winakung At Waterloo and the town is part of Allamuchy Mountain State Park.

Hello world!

Welcome traveler, Your GPS has lead you to HIKE JERSEY, a place for hiking info, reviews, and even a little jersey attitude. The blog will become more active after winter, but back reviews will be written to kill time.

I’m doing this for a few reasons. One I’d just like to be able to express my feelings and enjoyment. I was going to write these myself if nothing else, but if I can share knowledge or experiment and it helps someone else, that’s a nice bonus. I’ve also had fun creating the brand HIKE JERSEY between the posters (Downloads coming soon) and setting up yet another websites, it’s fun.

I am a New Jersey Native, currently based out of Hackettstown, but from South Jersey, and have been all over the state, North, South, East and West, and am one of the most unbiased New Jerseyians in that respect, although I have my favorite spots. If you’re from NJ and would like to contribute, regularly or a guest post, get me your into and the post, and I’ll make it happen, giving credit, links back, etc.

I will try to provide links to the best maps, GPS info, and any resources I use when hiking. First thing I’d recommend to keep in the car all the time is the New Jersey Atlas and Gazetteer and for $10 on amazon, you can’t beat it. Most Barnes and Noble and REI have it too, but it’s more costly there. This is always in my car, for finding my way back, or trying to get lost. I’ll have links to other maps and gear in the posts.

So hopefully this information becomes useful to someone and I’m not doing it for the selfish satisfaction of having done it. Even if it is futile, I don’t care, I’m from New Jersey!
